1. What is the range of the buoys from the coast?

  • Coastal buoy: 45-50 nautical miles (LTE/NBIOT).

  • Offshore buoy: Global coverage.

2. Where are SMARTOCEAN buoys visible?

  • Olex: Integrated. Add the URL during onboarding. From version 17.3, you can bookmark our URL for automatic downloads.

  • SailorsMate: 100% integrated by default.

  • TimeZero: Coming soon.

  • BarentsWatch FiskInfo: Direct reporting possible. Dynamic positioning is under development.

  • ECDIS systems: Solutions in progress

3. I can’t see others’ SMARTOCEAN buoys on Olex / My buoys aren’t visible to others on Olex

To display others’ SMARTOCEAN buoys in Olex, you must add a dedicated URL:

  1. Select "Settings" in the menu.

  2. Click "Downloads".

  3. Select "Create New".

  4. Click the new line containing ???.

  5. Replace ??? with this URL:
    https://api.smartocean.com/api/olex/smartoceanbuoys?authCode=TWKZUPMHFR

  6. Click "OK".

Others’ SMARTOCEAN buoys will now appear in Olex.

4. How long does the battery last?

Battery life depends on transmission frequency, temperature, and local conditions:

  • 1-minute frequency: 1 month

  • 5-minute frequency: 3 months

  • 10-minute frequency: 4.5 months

  • 15-minute frequency: 6 months

5. What does the subscription cost?

Prices are excl. VAT, per buoy.

  • 4G subscription:

    • Annual: NOK 600

    • Quarterly: NOK 160

    • Monthly: NOK 60

  • Satellite (Iridium, hourly updates):

    • Annual: NOK 3,600

    • Quarterly: NOK 1,050

    • Monthly: NOK 400

6. The buoy won’t turn on after subscription payment (red blinking light)

Follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your account.

  2. Go to "Buoys" in the menu.

  3. Click the arrow under "Actions".

  4. Select "Add buoy to your subscription".

  5. Click "Select".
    The buoy is now active.

7. Activate, deactivate, or adjust Geofence

  1. Ensure the buoy is powered on.

  2. Open the SMARTOCEAN app.

  3. Go to "Equipment" and select the buoy.

  4. Tap "Go to map", then "Geofence".

  5. Here, you can enable/disable Geofence or adjust its origin point and radius.

  6. Repeat for each buoy.
